Re: Is Windows 10 (as a laptop) any good?
from Lady on 06/17/2015 04:50 PMRahter than issue patches for the problems with Windows 8, Microsoft is releasing Windows 10 to those registered users of Windows 8 or later 8 version. I've noticed Microsoft has already been downloading parts of Windows 10 to our computers in the overnight hours. They are supposed to send you a notice when it is completed.
I'll be glad when Explorer is also updated to their new version. I've been using Firefox and Google Chrome in lieu of Explorer because of its many problems.

Re: Has home made mosquito trap worked for you?
from Lady on 06/17/2015 04:44 PMI haven't, but sounds like it could work. We have lots of mosquitos here in Florida and a year ago we planted a border (on both sides) of "mosquito" plants. Now that the plants are mature, they seems to be working. Nice green foliage and no flowers. Bugs and mosquitos in particular do not like these plants.
You can grow them in pots for your patio/deck or plant them directly in the ground. The spread nicely, make a nice border and are perennial.

You can see how nice and full they are. These were purchased at Home Depot, but any garden center should have them this time of the year and they are not that expensive. They'll spread rather quickly.

Re: Any advice of how to sleep better when it is hot outside?
from Lady on 06/16/2015 07:12 PMEither a portable A/C unit or a window unit for your bedroom. We keep the house at 72 at night and 75 in the day because Florida is so very hot from late April through mid November.

Re: What do you think of this 2015 fashion?
from Lady on 06/16/2015 07:06 PMUgh! But I guess back in 1960's and 1970's we wore some crazy stuff too. Each generation seems to have their own style and often revert to vintage styles.

Do you support Florida’s big decision about the American flag?
from Lady on 06/16/2015 07:03 PMThe state of Florida loves making headlines. But this time, it isn't bad news!
Our Founding Fathers at the Continental Congress adopted the original design of the American flag in 1777. With 13 stars and 13 red and white stripes... the flag has come a long way. And it symbolizes the freedoms that so many fought and died for. America is truly the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Florida Governor Rick Scott recently took an extra step in defending the American flag. He is mandating that all cities and counties within the state only buy American flags which are made in America.
That means no cheap knockoffs from China and other foreign countries. These are American flags, made by American workers for the American people. Awesome!
The "All American Flag Act" was one of 47 bills Scott signed Thursday, June 11th.
Local government and state agencies will have to start following the flag mandate after Jan. 1, 2016. Information compiled by legislative staff showed the vast majority of flags bought in the state are already American-made.
The flag bill triggered a debate on the House floor.
Some [...] said they could not support the legislation, because they said it was anti-competitive. But other lawmakers said taxpayer money should not be spent on flags made in other countries like China.
The small cost for this change is certainly worth it. It sends a strong, symbolic message in favor of American workers. The flags they make are the best, and should be flown with pride!

Do you think you should be able to fly the American flag on your porch?
from Lady on 06/15/2015 05:45 PMAccording to the Suffork News Herald, Toner's mother, from whom he rents the condo, had received written permission from the Belmont Park Homeowner's Association's property management company to fly the flag. Now, the HOA is demanding he take down the flag.
"My position is, if you are restricting a flag holder, you are restricting the American flag by association. It's an American flag; you should never have to take down one if it's reasonably displayed."
I totally agree with Toner's stance. What are your thoughts on being able to fly the American flag on your porch?

Do You Think this Home Owners Association Violate the Americans with Disabilities Act?
from Lady on 06/15/2015 05:31 PM
When a beloved Tennessee pastor suffered a stroke, his wife had a wheelchair ramp installed on the front of their home so her husband could reach his front door.
A logical and loving gesture for Michael Broadnax from his wife Charlotte. But others did not see it that way.
Their homeowners' association (HOA) refused to approve it, and sent a letter to Mrs. Broadnax which read, in part:
The association demands that within 14 days of the date of this letter, you remove the wheelchair ramp and restore the exterior of your home.
And if Charlotte didn't remove it within 14 days, the HOA threatened to sue her and tear down the ramp at her expense.
Charlotte sent the letter to friends, who contacted the news media, and the HOA soon likely regretted their heavy-handed approach.
After much local outrage from their parishioners and the public, the HOA is now offering to reach a "compromise" with the Broadnaxes. Their written response came as follows:
The governing documents for this community require that all exterior improvements receive prior approval. A letter was sent to the owner regarding the ramp as no application for approval had been received. The board did not know the ramp was for the homeowner, Mr. Broadnax. The association would like to work with the owners on a compromise regarding the appearance and location of the ramp and compliance with any applicable codes.
But a friend of Charlotte's said she had clearly told them the ramp was for her husband, and they refused to relent — that is, until the media got involved.
Many have pointed out that this HOA restrictions may well violate the Americans With Disabilities Act

How Does a Raccoon Cross the River?
from Lady on 06/15/2015 05:22 PMIt's not an animal sight you see often.
A Florida man says he snapped the "photo of a lifetime" of a raccoon resting on top of an alligator crossing the river at Ocala National Forest this last Saturday afternoon
Richard Jones of Palatka, who was walking along the Oaklawaha River with his family watching alligators, said his son walked through some palm fronds to get a good picture when he apparently startled the raccoon, WFTV reports.
Jones said the raccoon stumbled toward the water and hopped onto the back of a nearby alligator. He was able to take a photo before the alligator went underwater and the raccoon scurried back to land.
"Without the context you'd think the raccoon was hitching a ride across the river. Pretty amazing," he told the station.
